Charles U. Cross was the first person to settle in what we now know as the city of Bangor. Charles Cross came from New York with J.R Monroe in 1834. Charles Cross's adopted uncle, Samuel Payne, sent Charles and Samuel to survey the unseen land in Michigan he had acquired from the government. In 1835, Charles and Samuel were hired to cut a road from south Haven to Paw Paw.
The road was constructed through Samuel Payne's property. Charles Cross built his home on the main street, which is now located in downtown Bangor. The main street was given the name of Monroe Street, to honor J.R. Monroe. Joseph H. Nyman came to Bangor in 1856 and became an ambitious entrepreneur who probably had more impact on Bangor’s early development than any other person. After purchasing the Cross sawmill, he made water power the most important element to ensuring future growth.
